New South West Business Taps Into Lockdown Boom
The coronavirus shutdown has brought swaths of the global economy to a standstill, but for producers and purveyors of condoms and sex toys, business is booming. A Cornish based business has been launched to tap into the luxury end of this growth market.
The idea for Monada came just before the coronavirus lockdown and within four weeks the online retailer had launched offering a range of luxury feel and function adult products. The first sale was made within 30 minutes of the website going live.
The business is based in Cornwall and the distribution operation located just over the border in North Devon.
A spokeswoman for Monada said:
“In Italy sex toy purchases are trending 60 percent above the forecast, in France its 40 percent, Canada has hit 135 percent, the United States 75 percent and Hong Kong is 71 percent.
“The same trend is evident in the UK with the adult toy industry expanding. One of the biggest reasons is the increased rate of acceptance. Sex toy brands are not just manufacturing toys but also working towards neutralising the taboo around sex education and sexual wellness.
“We offer a discrete service from billing through to packaging and delivery. It started out as a bit of a joke, but when we looked into it, we realised that we had all the skills, experience and operational processes to make a go of running a business in this sector.”
Long gone are the cheap, low-quality products that once dominated. The focus is now on ever higher quality, affordability, new features and functions and crucially ever increasing levels of safety. Improved rechargeable battery technology and waterproofing of products has enabled boundaries to be pushed even further.
